About My Journey Compass Health
Licensed in Florida and Arizona | Telehealth available Statewide ages 6+.
Hi, I’m Leonarda (you can call me NP Gaige or Leona), a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
It is not a mistake you landed here.
I see you.
My Story
I founded My Journey Compass Health because I understand what it feels like to carry invisible weight. As an immigrant, I’ve navigated the space between two cultures, never fully belonging to either, yet wanting the best of both worlds.
I know what it’s like to be the strong one for everyone else while your own needs go unmet. I’ve experienced the exhaustion of high expectations, motherhood guilt and not being “good enough”, toxic workplace dynamics, grief I could not understand, and the burnout that forces you to finally stop and face what you’ve been avoiding all along.
I get it. My lived experiences shaped how I practice. For over a decade, I’ve worked in various healthcare settings with trauma survivors, burned-out caregivers, immigrants trying to find their footing, children carrying burdens too heavy for their age, and elders facing profound loss.
Whether in community clinics, correctional settings, hospice care, or crisis intervention, I’ve seen the same truth over and over: people don’t just need treatment. They need to be truly seen and understood.
My education and clinical training includes a Post-Master’s Certificate in Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner from Florida State University (Dec 2024), a Master of Science in Nursing with focus in Family Nursing from the University of South Florida ( May 2019), and an Associate of Science in Nursing from Polk State College (May 2014)
I am dual-board certified through the ANCC as a Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner.
But beyond the credentials, what I bring is cultural humility, patience, and the understanding that healing doesn’t follow a timeline. You’re not damaged goods. You’re human. And you deserve care that honors that.
I’m also a mother who raised two daughters, a woman of faith, and someone shaped by unique experiences, travels and encountering different cultures and perspectives.
These experiences taught me that our stories matter. How we got here shapes where we are today and influences how we move forward. I’m genuinely curious about your story and how the threads of your past connect to your present and your future.
Maybe you’ve been the strong one for so long that you’ve forgotten how to rest. Maybe you’re caught between cultures, expectations, or identities. Maybe you’re a parent watching your child struggle and feeling helpless. Or maybe you’re in that season of life where you’re asking, “Is this all there is?”
I work with people who’ve been carrying too much for too long with too little support:
-Caregivers and professionals experiencing burnout who’ve spent years showing up for everyone else and are now running on empty.
-Gen Xers navigating major life transitions, caught in the sandwich generation caring for aging parents and their own families while questioning whether there’s still time to redirect their path.
-School-aged children struggling with emotional regulation. Teachers say they’re “difficult” or “disruptive,” but their parents know something deeper is happening. These children need help learning to manage big feelings.
Trauma survivors ready to process childhood wounds, workplace trauma, or complex grief and reclaim their sense of self.
-Immigrants and “cultural misfits” caught between two worlds, never quite fitting into either, longing to be understood without constant explanation.
Individuals struggling with addiction, harmful patterns, or life after treatment who want to heal generational trauma, break cycles, and move forward with compassionate support.
Teens who feel like outsiders, struggling with identity, belonging, anxiety, or depression.
-Elders facing grief, loneliness, or loss of identity whose lives have shifted in isolating ways.
If you’ve felt invisible, misunderstood, or dismissed by previous providers, this practice was built for you.
I don’t believe in one-size-fits-all treatment or rushing your recovery. Together we identify the root of the problem. My practice integrates psychiatric evaluation, medication management, brief targeted psychotherapy aimed at stabilization, labs, and coaching, but more than that, I provide space for you to be heard without judgment or pressure.
We’ll explore what’s beneath the symptoms, not just treat what’s on the surface. If medication is part of your care, we’ll make decisions collaboratively.
When longer-term therapeutic work is needed, I collaborate with trusted colleagues who provide culturally responsive, trauma-informed counseling.
I serve children (ages 6+), teens, adults, and elders across Florida and Arizona through secure telehealth. This isn’t a high-volume practice where you get 15 minutes and a prescription refill. I take time to understand you because it has meaning.
Our work together is about transforming exhaustion, shame, and feeling stuck into clarity, peace, and renewed purpose. Healing doesn’t follow a straight line. It’s messy, non-linear, and deeply personal. My role is to walk alongside you, not ahead of you.
When I’m not working, you’ll find me with my family, friends or volunteering in underserved communities locally or through international mission work. These experiences remind me why this work matters and keep me grounded in service.
To protect the integrity of care, I do not:
- Prescribe controlled substances (though, I do facilitate safe benzodiazepine tapers for clients ready to be off and transition to other medications)
- Participate in custody disputes
- Complete disability paperwork
- Offer crisis or emergency services (if you’re in crisis, please call 988 or go to your nearest ER)
What I will do is help you explore meaningful pathways forward, connect you with additional resources when needed.
To provide trauma-informed, bilingual, evidence-based care that supports healing of the mind, body, and spirit. We focus not only on symptom relief, but on helping you reclaim your voice and your story, restore purpose, and reconnect with yourself.
**Compassion:** Meeting each client with warmth, dignity, and non-judgment.
**Collaboration:** Working with you, not on you, to build a care plan that fits your goals and health journey.
**Holistic Healing:** Blending psychiatric treatment with wellness, lifestyle, and meaning.
**Cultural Sensitivity:** Providing inclusive, bilingual care (English/Spanish) for diverse communities in Florida and Arizona.
**Trauma-Informed Care:** Honoring how your past shapes your present while helping you move toward healing at your pace.
You’re probably exhausted. Maybe you’re questioning whether anyone can really understand what you’re going through. Maybe you’ve tried therapy or medication before and it didn’t quite fit.
You don’t have to keep carrying this alone. Healing doesn’t mean you have to be fixed or perfect. It means giving yourself permission to be human, to rest, to be seen, and to begin again.
I’d be honored to walk this journey with you.

Volunteer Experiences
I have been privileged to serve on faith-based mission trips, both locally and abroad.
I traveled to countries such as Brazil and the Dominican Republic, providing emotional support, basic mental health education about resilience, self-respect, self-worth to teens and underserved communities.
These communities were facing poverty, trauma, and limited access to healthcare.
Serving in these environments deeply shaped me.
It strengthened my compassion, my cultural awareness, and my commitment to holistic, trauma-informed care.
Volunteering continue to influence how I show up for every client today.
